Big Island for the Third Time: Hilo Side

We made one final trip to the Big Island to attempt to see the lava flow at night.
The view from our "deluxe" hotel room in Hilo. We took a hike out over a lava field before the sun set. The trail was marked only with yellow reflector strips and was very uneven. Behind me is the steam from the lava flowing into the ocean.
The pictures don't do it justice. We could only see the flow of the lava against the steam. The darker it got outside, the easier it was to see.
"Spewing" lava, a comment we heard from a fellow on-looker. I would have chosen a different word to describe what I was seeing.
Gets a little chilly on the big island when the sun goes down.
That's me playing with my flashlight, a necessary item if you wanted to make it back to the car without falling down or getting lost. It was pitch dark outside.
Warning sign!
The night after we viewed the volcano, we did a little tour around Hilo to see what it had to offer. Above is a banyan tree that Amelia Earhart planted. That tiny person at the bottom is me!
Hilo is not the most exciting town. We ate at Ken's House of Pancakes for dinner and then breakfast the next day. I think it continues to sweep the best restaurant in Hilo award because it's the only one and they serve every meal. (Just a thought.)
Big Island Candies. They hand dip short bread cookies and other candies.
Closer view of their famous diagonal dipping. And yes there was taste testing!
Here I am at the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Plantation and Factory.
Get a load of those nuts!
We made a stop at some lagoons we thought would be warm, but that was not the case. Pretty chilly in fact. Some pools were very shallow and others deep. We jumped n a deep one. It was a little tricky climbing out.
We had to climb around and between the lagoons to find a good one.
Last stop was at a real hot tub. This pool is heated by the volcano and it was like hot bath water. This is the view with the island behind me.
This is a view out towards the ocean with Lauren in the bottom left. We really liked this pool. Totally worth the drive!
